NMSU’s student-led Campus Tutoring Services upgrades national certification

New Mexico State University’s Campus Tutoring Services (CTS) has been re-certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) at Level 1 and increased its certification to Level 2, indicating that it now delivers a higher level of service for our students. These certifications last through June 2025.

Equally as remarkable is that CTS is led by students. They helped put together the proposal, worked on assessments and evaluations of CTS services, and built the program to what it is today.

“We are Aggies serving Aggies, and these certifications demonstrate that our center meets CRLA’s highest standards for tutor selection, training and direct services. The work we do aligns with NMSU LEADS 2025 goals of increased student retention and degree attainment,” said Marci Salinas-Milam, Academic Success Center program director. Earning the Level 2 certification sets a benchmark for academic support excellence across the institution and ensures compliance with internationally-recognized best practices in higher education tutorial services.

“Daily, students take advantage of the tutoring program, and in some of the university’s most rigorous courses,” Salinas-Milam said. “We offer online tutoring, small group or large group appointments or walk-in sessions.”

“Marci and her team of peer tutors deliver high quality tutorial services that support the retention and graduation goals of New Mexico State,” said Tony Marin, assistant vice president for Student Affairs. “For example, students who were tutored in fall 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 passed their courses at the rates of 91.2%, 86.1% and 92.3%.”
