RE: SSEM Updates
Dear SSEM Family;
Today, New Mexico State University notified a couple of units of changes that will impact their reporting structure. Those changes resulted in changes for Student Success and Enrollment Management.
First, International Student Support Services (ISSS) will now report to Seth Miner, Director of Admissions. NMSU believes that having most of the recruitment and admissions activities under one umbrella will allow for continued specialization with cross functional training and support to accommodate the flow of various admission cycles.
The ISSS unit will be moving into the Educational Services Building as quickly as possible given existing work projects on campus. Over the next year, the Educational Services Building will undergo some minor office reconfigurations and an overall refresh with the ultimate goal of creating a first stop admissions and welcome center for prospective students and guests.
Additionally, NMSU wishes to expand our recruitment strategies into Mexico and grow the number of international students attending NMSU from our neighboring country of Mexico.
Second, the Office of Education Abroad (OEA) will be reporting to Tony Marin, AVP of Student Engagement. This is the first step in NMSU’s development of an Office of Experiential Learning. NMSU endeavors to utilize high impact practices to guide our choice of priorities and strategies with respect to curricular and co-curricular initiatives. Experiential learning which consists of service learning, research, study abroad, student employment, peer mentoring, internships and co-ops is an area that NMSU wishes to grow and support. The Office of Experiential Learning will be poised to support faculty in implementing experiential learning in their programs and connect students with experiential learning activities on campus.
An existing vacant position will be repurposed to become a Director of Experiential Learning. Tony Marin will be conducting an external search shortly to identify candidates for consideration and hire that can help NMSU design an intentional strategy for experiential learning and assess current practices and make recommendations for additional strategies and changes to accomplish the goal of increasing experiential learning opportunities for students and increasing the number of students engaging in experiential learning during their studies at NMSU.
I will keep the unit informed as these initiatives unfold. Thank you for your support of our students.
