Every three years, the Division of Student Success turns the table on the whole grading process and invites first-year students and seniors to rate NMSU through the National Survey of Student Engagement, or NSSE. Last administered in March of 2020, this year will be the first post-pandemic measure of student satisfaction with their college experience at NMSU.
The NSSE asks students about experiences in and outside the classroom, especially those associated with improved graduation rates. These beneficial experiences, referred to as high impact practices, include service learning, research with faculty, learning communities, internships, field experiences, study abroad, and senior capstone experiences. NSSE also asks about advising and experiences that promote higher-order thinking, learning strategies, reflective and integrative learning, quantitative reasoning, and academic advising.
Students will receive five messages inviting, or reminding, them to take the survey. These messages will be sent via email on March 1, 7, 20, 23, and 28. After the results are in, NSSE shares them with NMSU’s Office of Institutional Analysis and the Division of Student Success.
DSS staff will learn more at the fall DSS Staff meeting and in unit meetings, which will address how to use the results to inform continuous improvement. We also share results with our colleagues in the academic colleges.
